McCall is as fun in the snow as it is in the sun. Alpine skiers and snowboarders can find variety in the groomed runs at our three local ski resorts, Brundage Mountain, Tamarack Resort and the Little Ski Hill while acres of backcountry skiing await the truly adventurous telemark skiers amongst us.
Several local merchants rent skis, snowboards, and backcountry gear for those who want to demo cutting- edge technology or try a new sport. All of the ski resorts offer group lessons and personal instruction, and the McCall Ski Racing Team and McCall Nordic Ski Team encourage kids to learn excellent technique in a competitive, skill-based program that emphasizes fun.
Nordic skiers enjoy a tremendous variety of terrain in the McCall area with the internationally-ranked courses at Ponderosa State Park providing challenge for every level of skate or classic skiing. Site of both the 1998 and 2002 USSA Nordic Junior Olympics, and the 2001 USSA Nordic Senior Nationals, Ponderosa State Park offers some of the country’s premier Nordic racing trails. In addition, you will find excellent Nordic skiing at the McCall Golf Course, Spring Mountain Ranch Golf Course, Jug Mountain Ranch Golf Course and Tamarack Resort.
The Little Ski Hill, north of McCall, is home to the Payette Lakes Ski Club which grooms many kilometers of trails on rolling hills and sunny meadows all season in preparation for the annual Payette Lakes Ski Club Marathon held near the end of February. A biathlon range, a groomed dog loop,” and a T-bar lift at the Little Hill add variety to the options for Nordic and Alpine skiers.
Snowmobile enthusiasts will find information about excellent trails, backcountry powder, and organized events at the McCall Snowmobile Association website. Children of all ages can enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides, sledding, and dinners at The Activity Barn south of McCall. Snow Tubing on the Activity Barn’s gentle 700-foot hill is a local favorite for children and adults alike. In Ponderosa Park, the evenings belong to Blue Moon Outfitters who offer gourmet, world-cuisine meals in their Yurt under the pines.
The Manchester Ice and Event Center is a new, enclosed skating rink which is open 7 days a week, providing hours of family entertainment. Regularly scheduled professional and local team hockey events are a great winter time activity.
